It’s Spring time and the days are getting warmer. Durbanites are now emerging from their hibernation and starting to attend more festivals, pop up events and recently, First Thursdays on Florida Road which has become the most explosive event in Durban this year.
“First Thursdays is a global phenomenon where creatives from various art disciplines get together to do business whilst showcasing their skills,” said George Mthembu (Producer, curator, project manager).
First Thursdays had been an event that has picked up some traction in multiple cities across the world and now Durban has caught on. You can find the vibe beginning at Khaya Records. Once you find your car parked at the bottom of Florida Road it’s very hard to leave as most people immigrate up the road for more drinks and fun. The Quarters Hotel and Elizabeth Gordon Gallery have lovely treats and great artwork for those who want to end the working day on the quieter note
However if you find yourself wanting a beer or two you can choose from Cityzen, Trade Mark Tattoo, Counter Culture, Ethekwini Backpackers and Next Chapter offer music, drinks and much more. Not forgetting Side bar next to Spiga, you might find yourself leaving Florida Road at 2am. The one you really need to catch in time is happy hour from 3-6pm on Side Bar.
“Florida Road is a destination road visited by international and local tourists” said Mthembu.
This collective of restaurants have decided they will host First Thursdays and promise to bring a new meaning to Durban local events.
“Vision is for the whole road to activate during First Thursdays. For Florida road First Thursdays is cultural integration through art”
